Tóm tắt nội dung chính
Đại từ quan hệ giúp nối hai mệnh đề có chung đối tượng và làm câu ngắn gọn, mạch lạc hơn. Các đại từ thường gặp gồm who, whom, which, that, whose. Cách dùng cơ bản như sau:
- Who chỉ người, làm chủ ngữ/tân ngữ
- Whom chỉ người, chỉ làm tân ngữ
- Which chỉ vật
- That chỉ người hoặc vật
- Whose chỉ sở hữu
Để biết cách viết lại câu dùng đại từ quan hệ theo đúng trình tự 3 bước sau: Xác định đối tượng lặp lại -> Chọn đại từ thích hợp -> Ghép hai câu thành câu quan hệ
Ngoài ra, học sinh cần lưu ý các lỗi sai phổ biến khi làm bài tập hoặc viết câu có đại từ quan hệ:
- Nhầm giữa who và whom, nhầm whose với who’s
- Dùng which cho người
- Thiếu dấu phẩy trong mệnh đề không xác định

1. Ôn tập lý thuyết đại từ quan hệ (relative pronouns)
Đại từ quan hệ (relative pronouns) là một trong các loại đại từ thường gặp trong tiếng Anh, bạn có thể dùng đại từ quan hệ trong các trường hợp muốn rút gọn câu. Để có thể làm tốt bài tập đại từ quan hệ, chúng ta cần ôn lại một số kiến thức cơ bản dưới đây.
1.1. Cách dùng các đại từ quan hệ
Bạn cần nắm vững cách dùng các đại từ (pronoun) khi làm bài tập đại từ quan hệ who, whom, which, that và whose.
• Who: chỉ người (có thể làm tân ngữ hoặc chủ ngữ)
• Whom: chỉ người (chỉ có thể làm tân ngữ, lối văn trang trọng)
• Which: chỉ vật (có thể làm tân ngữ hoặc chủ ngữ)
• That: dùng cho cả người và vật (có thể làm tân ngữ và chủ ngữ)
• Whose: dùng để chỉ sự sở hữu cho người hoặc vật đứng trước.
1.2. Cách viết lại câu dùng đại từ quan hệ
Các bước viết lại câu dùng đại từ quan hệ đúng cấu trúc ngữ pháp tiếng Anh cơ bản bao gồm:
• Bước 1: Xác định đối tượng trùng nhau: Khi gặp các câu có chung đối tượng nói đến hoặc chủ ngữ thì chúng ta dùng đại từ quan hệ để kết nối các mệnh đề quan hệ với nhau.
• Bước 2: Xác định loại đại từ quan hệ để kết nối hai câu với nhau: Phần này các bạn xem lại và áp dụng cách dùng đại từ quan hệ.
• Bước 3: Ghép hai câu với nhau bằng đại từ quan hệ: Trong bài viết này có đề cập một số bài tập nối câu dùng đại từ quan hệ sẽ giúp bạn rèn luyện kiến thức mình vừa học được.
Ví dụ: The Downtown Hotel has been demolished for a luxury resort project. We stayed here on vacation last summer. (Khách sạn Downtown đã bị phá bỏ để làm dự án nghỉ dưỡng sang trọng. Chúng tôi ở lại đây vào kỳ nghỉ hè năm ngoái)
• Bước 1: Xác định đối tượng chung của hai câu: Cả hai câu đều đang nói về Khách sạn Downtown.
• Bước 2: Xác định đại từ quan hệ để kết nối hai câu: Đối tượng đang hướng đến là vật (1 địa điểm khách sạn) nên chúng ta sẽ dùng which hoặc that để nối hai câu này với nhau.
• Bước 3: Ghép câu dùng đại từ quan hệ which/that: The Downtown Hotel that we stayed on vacation last summer has been demolished for a luxury resort project. (Khách sạn Downtown cái mà chúng ta đã ở trong kỳ nghỉ hè năm ngoái đã bị phá bỏ để làm dự án nghỉ dưỡng sang trọng)

1.3. Các cách lược bỏ đại từ quan hệ
Đối với các bài tập lược bỏ đại từ quan hệ, bạn cần lưu ý 2 trường hợp:
1. Đại từ quan hệ làm tân ngữ của mệnh đề quan hệ: Bạn có thể lược bỏ who, which, that.
2. Đại từ quan hệ làm chủ ngữ của mệnh đề quan hệ: Bạn có 4 cách rút gọn đại từ quan hệ.
• Cách 1: Dùng cụm phân từ để lược bỏ đại từ quan hệ
Trong trường hợp này chúng ta cần xác định mệnh đề nằm ở thể bị động hay chủ động để sử dụng hiện tại phân từ V_ing hay quá khứ phân từ V3/ed.
• Cách 2: Rút gọn đại từ quan hệ bằng cụm động từ nguyên mẫu to V-inf (infinitive phrase)
• Cách 3: Rút gọn đại từ quan hệ bằng cụm danh từ/tính từ (noun phrase/ adjective)
Đây là một trường hợp đặc biệt vì chỉ có who và which có thể làm chủ ngữ đứng trước cụm danh từ, cụm giới từ và tính từ.
• Cách 4: Rút gọn đại từ quan hệ bằng with/without
Trong trường hợp mệnh đề quan hệ có chứa have, sau khi rút gọn lược bỏ đại từ quan hệ xong mà động từ trở thành “having” thì chúng ta đổi thành “with”, còn “not having” thì đổi thành “without”.
Bài tập lược bỏ đại từ quan hệ là dạng bài tập khá khó đối với các bạn đang học tiếng Anh cơ bản. Khi làm bài tập lược bỏ đại từ quan hệ, bạn cần chú ý đến các trường hợp rút gọn trên nhé.

2. Lưu ý quan trọng khi sử dụng đại từ quan hệ
Dưới đây là 5 lỗi sai phổ biến khi sử dụng đại từ quan hệ mà bạn cần tránh:
- Nhầm lẫn giữa who và whom: Nhiều người dùng who cho mọi trường hợp, dù whom mới đúng khi đóng vai trò tân ngữ. Việc nhầm lẫn làm câu nghe thiếu chuẩn xác trong văn viết.
- Dùng which cho người: Which chỉ dùng cho vật/ý tưởng, không áp dụng cho người. Dùng sai khiến câu trở nên không tự nhiên và sai ngữ pháp.
- Quên dấu phẩy với mệnh đề không xác định: Mệnh đề không xác định (non-restrictive clause) luôn phải có dấu phẩy để tách ý bổ sung. Thiếu dấu phẩy sẽ làm nghĩa câu bị hiểu nhầm.
- Dùng that sau dấu phẩy: That không được dùng trong mệnh đề không xác định, tức là không đứng sau dấu phẩy. Luôn dùng who hoặc which trong trường hợp này.
- Nhầm whose với who’s: Whose thể hiện sở hữu, còn who’s là viết tắt của who is/who has. Nhầm lẫn khiến câu sai hoàn toàn về nghĩa.
| Mẹo phân biệt who/whom: Thay đại từ bằng he/him để kiểm tra: nếu thay bằng he hợp nghĩa, dùng who; nếu thay bằng him hợp nghĩa, dùng whom.
Ví dụ:
Khi nào dùng that thay cho who/which? That được dùng trong mệnh đề xác định (restrictive) và có thể thay thế cho who/which khi thông tin rất quan trọng cho nghĩa câu. Tránh dùng that sau dấu phẩy hoặc trong mệnh đề bổ sung. Ví dụ:
