Đại từ phản thân trong tiếng Anh

Trong ngữ pháp tiếng Anh cơ bản, đại từ phản thân (reflexive pronoun) thường dùng để thay thế cho một danh từ trong câu. Đại từ phản thân sẽ phản chiếu lại chủ ngữ của chính câu đang nói. Để trả lời cho câu hỏi “đại từ phản thân là gì”, bạn có thể xem bảng đại từ phản thân theo các chủ ngữ cụ thể sau đây:

Ví dụ:
• Believe in yourself. You are definitely the best student.
(Hãy tin tưởng vào chính bạn. Bạn chính là học sinh xuất sắc nhất).

• She cut her finger by herself.
(Cô ấy đã tự cắt tay mình).

Vị trí của đại từ phản thân

Vị trí của đại từ phản thân trong cấu trúc câu tiếng Anh là gì? Đại từ phản thân có thể được đặt ở vị trí tân ngữ, bổ ngữ và chủ ngữ.

1. Tân ngữ trực tiếp (direct object)

Ví dụ: She knew John better than he knew himself. (Cô ấy biết John rõ hơn bản thân anh ấy)

→ Himself là tân ngữ trực tiếp của knew.

2. Tân ngữ gián tiếp (indirect object)

Ví dụ: She made herself some tea. (Cô ấy tự pha trà cho mình).

→ Herself là tân ngữ gián tiếp của made.

3. Bổ ngữ (complement)

Trong trường hợp này, đại từ phản thân luôn được nhấn mạnh.

Ví dụ: That poor boy was myself. (Chính tôi là cậu bé tội nghiệp đó).

→ Myself là bổ ngữ của was.

4. Tân ngữ của giới từ (prepositional object)

Trong trường hợp này, đại từ phản thân đứng sau các giới từ trong tiếng Anh.

Ví dụ: They seem very fond of talking about themselves. (Họ có vẻ thích nói về chính mình)

→ Themselves là tân ngữ của giới từ about.

5. Chủ ngữ (subject)

Ví dụ: My wife and myself were invited to the party. (Tôi và vợ tôi đã được mời đến dự tiệc)

Thông thường, cách dùng myself thay cho đại từ nhân xưng “I” trong câu trên khiến cho câu nói trở nên nhã nhặn và lễ độ hơn. Các đại từ phản thân, đặc biệt là “myself” thường dùng như một đại từ nhân xưng khi nó đứng sau danh từ + từ nối như “and, like, as,…”

Ví dụ:

• My sister and myself were the only ones not down with the flu.
(Em tôi và tôi là những người duy nhất không bị bệnh cúm quật ngã).

• To a bookworm like myself such a blow is irreparable.
(Với một kẻ mê đọc sách như tôi, một vố như thế thật khó phục hồi lại được).

• My brother is as tall as myself.
(Em tôi cao bằng tôi).

Cách dùng đại từ phản thân

Những động từ (verb) sau đây thường được dùng với đại từ phản thân:

• to believe in oneself: tự tin.

• to introduce oneself: tự giới thiệu.

• to kill oneself: tự tử.

• to be proud of oneself: tự hào.

• to blame oneself: tự trách mình.

• to tell oneself: tự nhủ.

• to teach oneself: tự học.

Cách dùng đại từ phản thân sẽ phụ thuộc vào vai trò của từ loại tiếng Anh này trong câu:

1. Đại từ phản thân làm tân ngữ trong câu

Trong trường hợp chủ ngữ và tân ngữ cùng chỉ đến một người, một vật nào đó thì bạn có thể dùng đại từ phản thân để thay thế.

Ví dụ: She is playing in the playground when suddenly she hurt herself (Cô ấy đang chơi ở sân thì đột nhiên cô tự làm đau mình).

2. Đại từ phản thân làm tân ngữ cho giới từ

Bên cạnh việc làm tân ngữ cho câu, đại từ phản thân còn đứng sau giới từ, làm tân ngữ cho giới từ.

Ví dụ:

• She told herself never to give up.
(Cô ấy tự dặn bản thân không bao giờ bỏ cuộc).

• She thought to herself that everything would be fine.
(Cô ấy tự nghĩ mọi thứ sẽ ổn).

3. Đại từ phản thân dùng để nhấn mạnh chủ thể hành động

Khi bạn muốn nhấn mạnh vào danh từ làm chủ ngữ của câu, bạn có thể đặt đại từ phản thân đứng sau chủ ngữ.

Ví dụ: Even Nam himself can’t understand what happen (Kể cả bản thân Nam cũng không hiểu được chuyện gì đang xảy ra).

4. Kết hợp với giới từ “by”

Đại từ phản thân thường đi cùng giới từ “by” khi muốn nhấn mạnh về một người đơn độc hoặc không ai giúp đỡ.

Ví dụ:
• My brother went home by himself.
(Anh tôi đã tự đi về nhà một mình).

• She did homework by herself.
(Cô ấy tự làm bài tập một mình).
