Định nghĩa the other, another, others, other
1. Other + danh từ đếm được/ không đếm được (plural nouns/ uncountable nouns) và the others
a. Other là gì?
Other là từ hạn định trước một danh từ số nhiều có thể đếm được hoặc danh từ không đếm được. Từ “other” mang nghĩa “khác”, “không bao gồm”, “khác loại”, một cách chung chung… nên bạn có thể dùng trong trường cả hợp danh từ cùng loại và khác loại với danh từ đã được đề cập trước đó.
Ví dụ:
• I don’t like grapes. Do you have other fruits? (Tôi không thích nho. Bạn có trái cây khác không?)
→ Trong ví dụ này, người nói bày tỏ việc mình không thích nho, nhưng sẽ sẵn lòng cân nhắc một loại trái cây khác bất kỳ (nếu có).
• I don’t enjoy playing soccer. Is there another sport we can try? (Tôi không thích chơi bóng đá. Có môn thể thao nào khác chúng ta có thể thử không?)

b. The others là gì?
The others cũng được dùng với danh từ số nhiều như other. Nhưng với sự có mặt của mạo từ “the” đi cùng làm cho “the others” trở thành hạn định từ chỉ dùng cho danh từ số nhiều đã được xác định – mang nghĩa “những … còn lại”.
Lưu ý rằng the others được dùng một mình, không có danh từ ở phía sau.
Ví dụ:
• There was only Jane coming yesterday. She said the others were busy. (Hôm qua chỉ có Jane đến. Cô ấy nói những người khác đang bận)
→ Trong ví dụ này, Jane và vài người khác được mời đến nhưng chỉ có Jane đến -> “the others” được hiểu là “những người còn lại”, đã được xác định và biết đến bởi người nghe.
• There was only Mark at the meeting yesterday. He mentioned that the rest of the team had prior commitments. (Hôm qua chỉ có Mark tới cuộc họp. Anh ấy nói rằng các thành viên khác đều đang có những công việc đã sắp xếp trước đó)

2. Another + danh từ số ít (singular nouns) và the other
a. Another là gì?
Another là sự kết hợp giữa “A/an + other”, có nghĩa là “một cái khác” nên được dùng làm hạn định từ (determiner) cho danh từ đếm được số ít. Another chỉ một cái khác với cái trước đó chung chung, không có hướng đến cái nào cụ thể.
Ví dụ:
• That cake was tasty. Can I have another one? (Cái bánh đó ngon lắm. Tôi có thể có một cái khác được không?)
→ Trong ví dụ này, người nói chỉ đến một cái bánh khác chung chung cùng loại, không có ý chỉ đến cái bánh nào cụ thể cả.
• The movie was interesting. I’d like to watch another one. (Bộ phim thú vị. Tôi muốn xem thêm một bộ phim khác)

b. The other là gì?
The other cần được hiểu một cách tương tự như “the others” nhưng là áp dụng cho số ít – mang nghĩa “cái còn lại” đã được xác định.
Ví dụ:
• She has two cats, one is black and the other is white. (Cô ấy có hai con mèo, một con màu đen và con kia màu trắng)
→ Trong ví dụ này, vì người nói đã giới thiệu trước rằng cô nào đó có hai con mèo cho nên “the other” chỉ có thể là “con mèo còn lại” – trong hai mèo của cô ấy.
• I have two books on the table, one is about history, and the other is about science. (Tôi có hai cuốn sách trên bàn, một cuốn về lịch sử và cuốn kia là về khoa học)
