Mệnh đề quan hệ là kiến thức ngữ pháp rất quan trọng đối với các bạn học tiếng Anh. Ôn tập lại các kiến thức về mệnh đề quan hệ
Mệnh đề quan hệ (relative clause) được dùng đề bổ nghĩa cho danh từ hoặc đại từ đứng trước nó, nhằm kết nối các mệnh đề với nhau mà không lặp lại thông tin.

1. Các loại mệnh đề quan hệ
Có hai loại mệnh đề quan hệ: mệnh đề quan hệ xác định và mệnh đề quan hệ không xác định.
• Mệnh đề quan hệ xác định được dùng để xác định cho danh từ đứng trước nó, không có dấu phẩy ngăn cách với mệnh đề chính. Trong mệnh đề xác định có thể lược bỏ các đại từ và trạng từ quan hệ trong lối văn mang tính thân mật, văn nói.
• Mệnh đề quan hệ không xác định cung cấp thêm thông tin về một người, một vật và luôn có dấu phẩy đứng trước. Mệnh đề xác định không dùng “that”.
2. Các đại từ quan hệ và trạng từ quan hệ
Bảng đại từ quan hệ:

| Who | • Dùng làm chủ ngữ hoặc tân ngữ thay cho danh từ chỉ người. | • The boy who sits next to me is very friendly. |
| Whom | • Dùng làm tân ngữ để chỉ người. | • The man whom you met yesterday is my uncle. |
| Which | Dùng làm chủ ngữ hoặc tân ngữ thay cho danh từ chỉ vật, con vật, sự việc. | • The laptop which I bought last week is expensive. |
| That | • Dùng làm chủ ngữ hoặc tân ngữ thay cho danh từ chỉ người, vật, con vật, sự việc.
• That chỉ được dùng trong mệnh đề xác định. |
• The book that designed this building is very famous. |
| Whose | Dùng làm chủ ngữ hoặc tân ngữ để chỉ sở hữu cho danh từ chỉ người và vật. | • The girl whose mother is a teacher is my friend. |

Bảng trạng từ quan hệ:

| When | • Dùng thay cho danh từ chỉ thời gian.
• Có thể thay thế bằng: on/at which. |
• I remember the day when (on which) we first met. |
| Why | • Dùng để chỉ lý do.
• Có thể thay thế bằng: for which. |
• The reason why (for which) she left is still unknown. |
| Where | • Dùng thay thế cho danh từ chỉ nơi chốn.
• Có thể thay thế bằng: at/in which. |
• This is the house where (in which) I was born. |
3. Rút gọn mệnh đề quan hệ
Khi mệnh đề quan hệ ở thể chủ động thì dùng V-ing:
• Boys who attend this school… -> Boys attending this school.
Khi mệnh đề quan hệ ở thể bị động thì chuyển thành quá khứ phân từ V-ed:
• Goods which are made in this factory… -> Goods made in this factory.
Trong câu có các số thứ tự (first/last/second…), so sánh nhất hoặc những động từ khuyết thiếu (can, could, must…) thì mệnh đề quan hệ rút gọn sẽ được chia theo to V. Tương tự nếu ở dạng bị động thì sẽ được chuyển thành to +Ved. This is the only method that works effectively -> This is the only method to work effectively.

4. Một số lưu ý khác của mệnh đề quan hệ
Trong mệnh đề quan hệ, khi làm tân ngữ thường có các giới từ đặt trước hoặc sau mệnh đề, chỉ áp dụng đối với đại từ quan hệ “whom” và “which”: The woman without whom I can’t live is my mom. (Người phụ nữ mà tôi không thể sống thiếu là mẹ tôi.)
Trong mệnh đề quan hệ không xác định, các cụm từ chỉ số lượng all of/most of/ neither of/ many of/… có thể được dùng với whom, which và whose: Minh tried on three shirts, none of which fitted him. (Minh đã thử 3 chiếc áo sơ mi, không chiếc nào vừa với anh ấy.)
